Imogen B.

Private tutor in London, United Kingdom

Education

In October 2012 I'll submit my PhD in Geography at King's College London. I'm also enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice at King's, a teaching qualification for higher education which I will complete in 2013. I gained a distinction in my MSc Environment and Development from King's. I got a 1st in My BSc in Environmental Science form University of East Anglia.

Experience

I'm currently a geography tutor at King's, where I am finishing off my PhD. I use the experiential, reflective methods I am learning about in my higher education teaching course to help my tutees pass their exams. I've taught A-level Biology methods in schools in South London, using my PhD fieldwork as a case study through which A-level students practice the data analysis skills they need in their practical exams. I regularly go into schools across the South East through a charity called CREATE to teach environmental education linked to the Geography and Science curricula. I work with teachers to develop fun, often outdoor, ways to teach exam content in a practical way that will help students remember and enjoy. I've found that working one-to-one or in small groups I can use the experiential techniques I've learnt about in my teacher training to help student not only succeed but also enjoy learning, and that's why I want to be a tutor. I work with you to develop a plan for your learning, whether it is to pass a specific exam or generally enhance what you are doing in class. It's important to relate everything to your syllabus, so we will make a workplan deciding what we are going to tackle when. This means I can prepare extra learning materials for each session. As far as possible, I make these materials interactive and fun: through my experience and teacher training I know that each student has a different learning style. You might respond to learning tools that use technology, venture outdoors, or just need a patient, careful explanation from me.

Hobbies

I'm a geography researcher because I love travel and care about the environment. I did my PhD and MSc fieldwork on sustainable agriculture in Northern Ghana, and if I'm not gardening in my own allotment I love swapping travel stories and experiences with my pupils.
